Virtual or Dedicated server
My recommendation is if you are on a shared hosting plan and you feel the need to upgrade to a dedicated server or virtual dedicated server, I would upgrade to the Virtual dedicated server (aka VPS) Going from a shared host to a dedicated hosting service is a very large change. Believe me, I have been there. I started out on a shared hosting plan and for many years, it worked fine. As the site grew to 700 pages and thousands of unique visitors per week, I noticed that the site became sluggish. At this point I went with a virtual server and started to expand from there. As the number of wibsites that I hosted approached 28 and daily visitors was between 3 and 4 thousand people daily, the need to upgrade was starting to become more obvious.
At this point I decided to upgrade to the dedicated server. This was very easy and quick for me as all the web sites were on my personal computer. After a day of uploading, I was in business. At each upgrade, the results were phenomenal.
I can't think of a situation where upgrading from a shared hosting plan to a dedicated plan. There is no benefit to paying for a dedicated server if you do not have the need for it.
